Good afternoon and we hope you enjoyed a happy and safe holiday week-end for those in the U.S. . Failure is an event that occurs often in businesses.
DSWoodard.com is open almost 24/7, but most offices are closed, so you don't get as many phone and email interruptions. The down side is you can't get to contact new or potential clients. It's still a good trade off.
Would you take this exit if you were driving? Why? Why not? This is a challenge that we all have been conditioned from the time that we started walking, or attempting to walk not to do. We have been taught to avoid failure like the plague, but every parent knows that the child will not just get up and walk.
Every parent knows that the child must go through a series of failures. He must first crawl and not even forward, but backwards first. The child will then scoot forward or roll forward or sideways. The child will eventually raise up on his/her knees and hold himself up and take one or two movements forward only to fall on his stomach and then roll on his back. It takes however long it takes for the child to learn by trial and error to crawl. It takes however long it takes for her to then gain courage to attempt to walk. We all know this and have all experienced this in our own lives and have seen someones baby that had to be carried everywhere for at least the first year of their life, so why are we so scared of failure?
We don't want to put in the effort that it takes to progress. We have also been told that failure is bad and should be avoided at all cost. We have been shamed into believing that we are or can be perfect or we lose. None of this is true.
This man is crawling because of an epic fail. We have to fail. You have no idea what success is if you don't know what failure is. Your failure is different than that of another salesperson or business owner. Your failure should be welcomed as an indication that you are trying new things and making mistakes that will teach you the better way to do a thing or several things. You also cannot teach others to be successful if you have nothing but success. How can you teach your manager or your sales person how to overcome an objection if you never failed to get a yes? How can you teach your family how to be good stewards of their money to make it grow if you always had money and just expected it to come to you? You can't.
Don't forget taking action is the key to eventual success. One of the greatest of all time had this to say about failure:
So expect to fail and welcome it. Fear of failure keeps you from advancing forward. Use your fear and your failures as stepping stones along your journey to a thriving business or career.
As you press forward remember this speech from the inspirational movie, "Coach Carter."
