We've heard this all of our lives and we believe what is repeated to us over and over again, "practice makes what?" Well I have news for you, practice does not make perfect. However, practice does make us better. I heard Les Brown say this and I found it to be true.
What do the pro's do? They practice all week to win the big game on Sunday. They stretch, they run, they complete drills, they practice making 3-point shots, they practice catching the ball while running full speed towards the end-zone, they practice blocking and guarding against the opponent scoring points. They practice for the big game with one goal in mind, they want to win.
As a professional what aspects of what you do are you willing to practice everyday? Do you practice ahead of time how you will greet your customer? Do you practice what specific words you say based on what you know works or do you just say the first thing that comes to your mind? Most businesses you call have practiced and this is what they say,"we're having a great day at DSWoodard Consulting, this is Denise, how may I help you today?" What does that let the potential customer assume? They need what you have, your having fun there, your business is prosperous, I might be missing out if I don't get to do business with them.
In any business there is a road map to a sale. Usually six to ten steps that if practiced and repeated with every customer you will get your customer to make an offer to purchase at least 70% of the time, that's seven out of every ten customers will buy from you if you follow these steps. What happens is that of those 10 customers the sales person or the business pro only follows those steps completely with about 4 to 6 of every 10 customers, so they consistently lose money. If you do as pro's and practiced everyday before the big game, before we go to the office what would happen? You will make more sales and increase your income.
Why don't we practice to get better? We say we are pro's, doctors, teachers, athletes of all types practice. Doctors and teachers have mandatory continuing educational courses they must attend to maintain their licenses , yet it also keeps them sharp, it reminds them to do the steps that create success. Michael Jordan, one of the greatest to ever play pro basketball, said he practiced MAKING 100 free-throws in a row daily. How many did he have to miss in order to make 100 in a row? It doesn't matter his results made him great. So if you are in business are creating a business or consider yourself any type of professional, do what the pro's do. Practice daily what you do so that you are sharp, so that you are better today than you were yesterday.
If you are getting objections or customers who can't buy it's is never the customer, the product or the service, it is always you. You are not being a professional, you need to take a class, read books, or listen to some form of personal and professional development CD program. Create a script of what you are to do with each customer, the pro athletes call it a play book, if they do this we do this, if they say this we say this. Does this make us perfect? No, but it increases our chances of winning, it puts the odds in our favor. Remember, 7 out of every 10 customers will buy if you can be be a pro with all 10 of them.
Be confident, expect to win, create your own success. Go to the public library, the local book store, or the Internet and read something that helps you get better. Then start to plan, do the actions, and review your daily actions so that you know where in your daily actions you need more practice to get better.
